Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness or minus power in glasses, is a condition where distant objects appear blurry because the eyeball grows too long. Excessive screen use, close-up study in small spaces, and very little outdoor play put stress on children's growing visual systems. The WHO estimates that by 2050, half the global population will be myopic — making early myopia control intervention more critical than ever.

Is myopia just a glasses problem, or are there serious health risks?

Myopia is far more than a spectacle prescription issue. As minus power increases, so does the risk of vision-threatening complications in adulthood, including retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, cataract, and glaucoma. A person with –5.00 D myopia is 4 times more likely to suffer a myopia-related complication than a contact-lens complication in their lifetime. The higher the minus power, the greater the risk — which is why controlling progression early is essential.

What is Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) and how does it control myopia?

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) uses specially customised rigid contact lenses worn only at night while sleeping. They gently reshape the cornea so that when the child wakes up, they can see clearly throughout the day without glasses or daytime lenses. Ortho-K is the most widely used and most effective myopia control method globally, slowing progression by up to 90% in many cases. Are Atropine eye drops safe for children with myopia?

Accepted Answer

Low-concentration Atropine eye drops used once at night are generally considered safe and provide good myopia control. However, long-term safety data is still limited, and some studies suggest that while Atropine slows power increase, it may not significantly slow the actual elongation of the eyeball — which drives long-term complications. What is the right age to start myopia control?

Myopia control is most effective when started as early as possible after onset. Children's eyes grow fastest between ages 6 and 14, which is when myopia typically progresses most rapidly. How do I know if my child needs myopia control treatment?

Your child may benefit from myopia control if they are already wearing glasses with a minus (–) prescription, are getting a stronger prescription each year, spend a lot of time on screens or close-up study, get very little outdoor activity, or have a parent or sibling with high myopia. We recommend a full baseline evaluation as soon as myopia is first detected.

The initial consultation is a detailed 1 to 1.5 hour eye examination covering baseline refraction, corneal topography (a map of the cornea's shape), A-Scan axial length measurement (the actual physical length of the eyeball), eye muscle and binocular vision assessment, and a review of family and lifestyle history. How often will my child need follow-up visits for myopia control?

After starting treatment, your child will be reviewed every 4 to 6 months. At each visit we re-measure the axial length and power to assess how well the strategy is working. If needed, we adjust or combine treatments. Regular monitoring is a non-negotiable part of effective myopia control.

Can lifestyle changes alone control myopia without medical treatment?

Lifestyle changes — particularly increasing outdoor time to at least 2 hours a day and reducing continuous near-work — can slow myopia onset. However, once myopia is established and progressing, lifestyle changes alone are rarely sufficient to achieve the 40–90% reduction in progression that clinical treatments offer.
