More than just checking how clearly you see
A comprehensive eye examination is much more than reading a chart or checking your spectacle power. We look at your eyesight, the health of your eyes and how well your whole visual system is working, including how well your two eyes work as a team.
Eyesight and vision are not the same thing. Eyesight is how clearly you see. Vision is the bigger picture: how your eyes work together and how your brain interprets what they see. That is why a good eye examination looks beyond the spectacle number.

Who should have it?
For most new patients this is where we start. Unless you have already been advised to have a particular test, by us or by another eye-care professional, begin with a comprehensive eye examination.
It tells us about:
- Your sharpness of sight and spectacle power
- The health of your eyes
- How well your two eyes coordinate
- The health of your central retina
- Your overall visual needs
If we find something that needs a closer look, we will explain why and recommend the right specialised test.
What the examination includes
- Eyesight: how clearly each eye sees, and whether you need correction.
- Eye health: the structures of your eyes examined under a microscope.
- Binocular vision: how well your two eyes work together, which affects comfort and focus.
- Central retina: the central 30 degrees of the retina checked, so we know the back of the eye is healthy too.
How we are different
We are not only looking for a spectacle number. We look at three things: how clearly you see, how healthy your eyes are and how well your visual system is working.
Many places offer a free eye test, or adjust it against the price of spectacles. At Saoji Vision Care the ₹700 fee is charged whether or not you buy spectacles from us. That keeps the examination and the purchase as two separate decisions, so we can do every test you clinically need and give you an honest opinion.
If we find a problem with eye coordination
Sometimes the examination shows that your eyes are not working together as comfortably as they should. Then we may recommend a Binocular Vision Examination, a detailed look at eye movements, coordination and focusing. It can explain eye strain, headaches during visual tasks, difficulty with long near work, intermittent blur or double vision, and reading difficulties. We will always explain why before going ahead.

What we check and offer
- Vision problemsComprehensive eye exam, including a short binocular vision check-up in the basic consultation.
- Myopia risk assessmentSpecialised myopia risk assessment — the only exam done at zero fees (worth ₹3,000) the first time. If your child wears glasses, get this done.
- Binocular visionWe check your eye muscles in great detail, because good muscle strength is essential for comfortable vision.
- Computer visionWorried about your eyes while working on computers? We help you use screens without the strain.
- Prism testingEyes can become misaligned after accidents or neurological problems; we examine accurately and provide prism solutions.
- Eye health checksSlit lamp, eye pressure, retina and colour vision assessment in every full examination.

Questions about Comprehensive Eye Examination

What is a comprehensive eye examination?
A comprehensive eye examination is a full clinical assessment of your vision and eye health — far beyond a standard spectacle number check. At Saoji Vision Care in Nagpur, it includes precise refraction (prescription measurement), binocular vision assessment using Bernell instruments, slit lamp microscope examination of the front of the eye, intraocular pressure measurement for glaucoma risk, retinal examination of the back of the eye, and where needed: corneal topography, axial length measurement, colour vision testing, and myopia risk assessment. The examination is conducted by experienced optometrists and concludes with a clear explanation of every finding.", "url": "https://saojivision.com/comprehensive-eye-examination/#what-is-it
What is the difference between a comprehensive eye examination and a regular eye test?
A regular eye test typically determines your spectacle number (refraction) and may include a basic pressure check. A comprehensive eye examination goes significantly further: it assesses binocular vision (how both eyes work together as a team), examines the eye under a slit lamp microscope for early disease, evaluates the retina for signs of detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic changes, and optic nerve health, and — where relevant — measures corneal shape, eyeball length, and myopia progression risk. Many conditions that cause permanent vision loss develop without symptoms; a comprehensive examination is the only way to detect them early.", "url": "https://saojivision.com/comprehensive-eye-examination/#difference
What is binocular vision and why is it tested during an eye examination?
Binocular vision is the ability of both eyes to work together as a coordinated team to produce a single, clear, three-dimensional image. Even when each eye individually has perfect eyesight, a breakdown in this teamwork produces eye strain, headaches, reading fatigue, difficulty concentrating, poor depth perception, and sometimes double vision. Binocular vision problems are among the most commonly missed causes of academic difficulty in children. Saoji Vision Care is one of the few clinics in India that uses the full original range of Bernell instruments — the international clinical standard — to assess binocular vision as part of every comprehensive examination.", "url": "https://saojivision.com/comprehensive-eye-examination/#binocular-vision
What is a slit lamp examination of the eye?
A slit lamp is a high-magnification clinical microscope used to examine the structures at the front of the eye in fine detail — the eyelids, cornea, anterior chamber, iris, and crystalline lens. It is the standard tool for detecting early cataract, corneal diseases, dry eye, uveitis, and other conditions that produce no visible symptoms until they are significantly advanced. At Saoji Vision Care, slit lamp examination is a routine part of every comprehensive eye check.", "url": "https://saojivision.com/comprehensive-eye-examination/#slit-lamp
What is intraocular pressure and why does it need to be checked?
Intraocular pressure (IOP) is the fluid pressure inside the eye. Elevated IOP is the primary risk factor for glaucoma — a condition that progressively damages the optic nerve and causes irreversible vision loss, often with no symptoms until significant damage has already occurred. Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in India. Measuring IOP as part of every comprehensive examination allows early detection and timely intervention before permanent nerve damage develops.", "url": "https://saojivision.com/comprehensive-eye-examination/#intraocular-pressure
What is a retinal examination and what can it detect?
A retinal examination assesses the back of the eye — the optic disc, macula, and peripheral retina. It detects eye-specific conditions including retinal detachment, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and myopic retinal changes. Importantly, the retinal blood vessels are the only blood vessels in the body directly visible without a surgical incision — making retinal examination a window for detecting systemic conditions like hypertension and diabetes that often show their earliest signs here, before they are detected elsewhere.", "url": "https://saojivision.com/comprehensive-eye-examination/#retinal-examination
